All About Hammertoes

A hammertoe is a type of toe deformity that affects the smaller toes, causing the joint to form a peak in the middle instead of lying flat. This peak then rubs against the inside of a shoe, causing pressure that results in pain. The longer you wait to address the issue of a hammertoe, the worse it gets and the more difficult it is to correct. In the early stages, the toe joint may still be flexible. Non-surgical treatment, such as wearing a protective pad or changing the type of shoes worn, can often keep the pain at bay. However, as the hammertoe progresses, the joint becomes more rigid and may require surgery to correct it. Hammertoe is usually caused by an imbalance in the muscle and tendon that leads to the bending of the toe. A hammertoe can be made worse by wearing shoes that do not fit properly or that force the toes into a cramped position. Sometimes a hammertoe is hereditary or caused by trauma. For more information about how to get relief from a hammertoe, please consult a podiatrist.

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact one of our podiatrists of Lovely Foot Associates, PC. Our doctors will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that occurs due to an imbalance in the muscles, tendons, or ligaments that normally hold the toe straight. It can be caused by the type of shoes you wear, your foot structure, trauma, and certain disease processes.

Symptoms

  • Painful and/or difficult toe movement
  • Swelling
  • Joint stiffness
  • Calluses/Corns
  • Physical deformity

Risk Factors

  • Age – The risk of hammertoe increases with age
  • Sex – Women are more likely to have hammertoe compared to men
  • Toe Length – You are more likely to develop hammertoe if your second toe is longer than your big toe
  • Certain Diseases – Arthritis and diabetes may make you more likely to develop hammertoe

Treatment

If you have hammertoe, you should change into a more comfortable shoe that provides enough room for your toes. Exercises such as picking up marbles may strengthen and stretch your toe muscles. Nevertheless, it is important to seek assistance from a podiatrist in order to determine the severity of your hammertoe and see which treatment option will work best for you.

Nerve Damage to the Feet Caused by Diabetes

The nerves of the body send signals to its parts in the periphery, such as the feet. A diabetic who has developed nerve damage from long-term high blood sugar levels may have a side effect known as neuropathy. This results in a lack of feeling in the feet, which may cause other harmful side effects. Some risk factors that can cause neuropathy include overconsumption of alcohol, imbalance in vitamin B levels, and certain medications. Among the symptoms of diabetic nerve damage are prickling, tingling, and burning sensations. In addition, someone with diabetic neuropathy may experience sharp, shooting pain that feels like being pricked by a needle. If you have nerve damage in your feet, you may also be at risk of developing ulcers from sores, cuts, or wounds that go undetected due to numbness. Although there is no cure yet for diabetic neuropathy, several treatments are available to reduce its effects. For additional help, please consult with a podiatrist who is trained in how to handle this type of condition.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy can be a potentially serious condition, especially if it is left undiagnosed. If you have any concerns that you may be experiencing nerve loss in your feet, consult with one of our podiatrists from Lovely Foot Associates, PC. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment for neuropathy.

What Is Neuropathy?

Neuropathy is a condition that leads to damage to the nerves in the body. Peripheral neuropathy, or neuropathy that affects your peripheral nervous system, usually occurs in the feet. Neuropathy can be triggered by a number of different causes. Such causes include diabetes, infections, cancers, disorders, and toxic substances.

Symptoms of Neuropathy Include:

  • Numbness
  • Sensation loss
  • Prickling and tingling sensations
  • Throbbing, freezing, burning pains
  • Muscle weakness

Those with diabetes are at serious risk due to being unable to feel an ulcer on their feet. Diabetics usually also suffer from poor blood circulation. This can lead to the wound not healing, infections occurring, and the limb may have to be amputated.

Treatment

To treat neuropathy in the foot, podiatrists will first diagnose the cause of the neuropathy. Figuring out the underlying cause of the neuropathy will allow the podiatrist to prescribe the best treatment, whether it be caused by diabetes, toxic substance exposure, infection, etc. If the nerve has not died, then it’s possible that sensation may be able to return to the foot.

Pain medication may be issued for pain. Electrical nerve stimulation can be used to stimulate nerves. If the neuropathy is caused from pressure on the nerves, then surgery may be necessary.

Common Causes of Foot Deformities

There are many deformities that can inhibit your daily activities, cause pain, and affect all or part of the foot. Among the most common foot deformities are bunions, hammertoe, flat feet and high arches, claw toe, and clubfoot. Foot deformities are sometimes caused by lifestyle choices, such as wearing shoes that do not fit properly. Wearing high heels for long periods can result in bunions, as well as pain in the ball of the foot. Shoes with narrow and pointed toe boxes may also contribute to the formation of hammertoes, as well as other toe deformities, like claw toes. Other causes of deformities are injury and genetics. Additionally, foot deformities may be the result of underlying medical conditions, including several types of arthritis and diabetes. Rheumatoid arthritis, which is an autoimmune disease, often results in bony formations and distortions in the bones of the feet. Some foot deformities, such as clubfoot, are congenital. In many cases, this deformity can be corrected if treated early in the child’s life. Slightly deformed feet may sometimes be corrected with special bracing or custom orthotics. More severe deformities may require surgery. If you have questions about a deformity of your foot, please consult a podiatrist.

Contacting a Doctor About Your Broken Toe

A broken, or fractured, toe can cause a patient pain, swelling, or even prolonged bruising. If you have broken your toe, there are several things you should be on the lookout for that might indicate you ought to seek immediate medical attention. Generally speaking, severe toe fractures require prompt professional attention. Severe fractures are those that involve open wounds, the big toe, or suddenly crooked toes. Additionally, some severe symptoms might indicate that you ought to see a doctor. For example, if you notice any sensations of numbness, visible red streaks around the affected toe, or bleeding, it is wise to see a podiatrist immediately. Also, if you find that you have developed a fever after you have broken your toe, this is another reason to make an appointment. It is best to err on the side of caution and let a medical professional, such as a podiatrist, examine your condition.

A broken toe can be very painful and lead to complications if not properly fixed. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Lovely Foot Associates, PC. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Throbbing pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising on the skin and toenail
  • The inability to move the toe
  • Toe appears crooked or disfigured
  • Tingling or numbness in the toe

Generally, it is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated.

Severe toe fractures may be treated with a splint, cast, and in some cases, minor surgery. Due to its position and the pressure it endures with daily activity, future complications can occur if the big toe is not properly treated.

If you have any questions please feel free to contact our office located in Johnstown, PA . We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot and ankle needs.

Causes of Ankle Pain at Night

Ankle pain at night can be debilitating, because it interferes with sleep. The ankle allows your feet to flex and extend, so if you move your foot while sleeping it will aggravate an injured ankle and result in pain. Other symptoms include swelling, bruising, and deformity. Frequently, the pain from an injured ankle also radiates into the foot, lower leg, and knee, causing further discomfort and more opportunity to lose sleep. One cause of ankle pain is a sprain, which is a torn or ruptured ligament that results when your foot rolls inward and stretches the ligament past its normal range. Other causes of ankle pain include bursitis, tendonitis, and arthritis. Being overweight can cause and increase ankle pain. Stress fractures in the foot, along with gout and poor circulation are known to contribute to ankle pain. Treating ankle pain can be a long process, and it is wise to consult with a podiatrist early to reduce the time it will take to heal. A podiatrist can examine your ankle and address the cause of the pain, offering proper treatment options that may help you sleep better at night.

Ankle pain can be caused by a number of problems and may be potentially serious. If you have ankle pain, consult with one of our podiatrists from Lovely Foot Associates, PC. Our doctors will assess your condition and provide you with quality foot and ankle treatment.

Treating Bunions

Bunions are a common affliction of the foot where a bony bump develops on the side of the big toe. This causes the top of the big toe to point towards the second toe, and the structure of the big toe’s bones can be manipulated. A medical professional, such as a podiatrist (a foot specialist), may recommend to you several different treatment options for your bunions short of a surgical procedure. For instance, it might be recommended to take nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medications to minimize inflammation. Also, a podiatrist might recommend avoiding physical activities that exacerbate symptoms of bunions or wearing footwear that provides more space in the toe box area. Lastly, a podiatrist may recommend applying an ice pack to your bunions several times a day to reduce inflammation. Contact a podiatrist today if you have a case of bunions.

If you are suffering from bunions, contact one of our podiatrists of Lovely Foot Associates, PC. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

A bunion is formed of swollen tissue or an enlargement of boney growth, usually located at the base joint of the toe that connects to the foot. The swelling occurs due to the bones in the big toe shifting inward, which impacts the other toes of the foot. This causes the area around the base of the big toe to become inflamed and painful.

Why Do Bunions Form?

Genetics – Susceptibility to bunions are often hereditary

Stress on the feet – Poorly fitted and uncomfortable footwear that places stress on feet, such as heels, can worsen existing bunions

How Are Bunions Diagnosed?

Doctors often perform two tests – blood tests and x-rays – when trying to diagnose bunions, especially in the early stages of development. Blood tests help determine if the foot pain is being caused by something else, such as arthritis, while x-rays provide a clear picture of your bone structure to your doctor.

How Are Bunions Treated?

  • Refrain from wearing heels or similar shoes that cause discomfort
  • Select wider shoes that can provide more comfort and reduce pain
  • Anti-inflammatory and pain management drugs
  • Orthotics or foot inserts
  • Surgery

Chronic Foot Pain in the Elderly

At least one in four older adults suffers from foot pain. The feet play a critical role in all weight bearing activities as they are the body’s only source of contact with the ground. The feet help with shock absorption, adapt to uneven surfaces, and ease the forward propulsion of the body. If the biomechanical function of the feet is disrupted, it can lead to imbalance, difficulty walking, and ultimately a loss of independence. The most frequently reported problems leading to foot pain in the senior population include corns and calluses, fungal nail infections, and structural deformities, such as bunions and hammertoes. Systemic conditions often associated with foot pain in this age group include arthritis and diabetes. Given that multiple conditions may coexist to cause foot pain, it is suggested that seniors regularly consult with a podiatrist to have their feet examined, obtain proper diagnoses, and get effective treatment that can help restore a pain-free existence.

If you need your feet checked, contact one of our podiatrists of Lovely Foot Associates, PC. Our doctors will attend to all of your foot and ankle needs and provide you with quality treatment.

Geriatrics and Podiatry
When people age, some common issues that may occur are bone density loss, dry skin, poor circulation, and rough brittle nails. These issues may also affect your foot health if the necessary steps are not taken to alleviate the problems.

It is important to take care of your feet because feet that are injured or diseased can affect your overall health. Having painful feet hinders your ability to do daily activities or may decrease your willingness to do the things that you need to do.

Visiting Your Geriatrician
As we age, health problems become more likely, so it is essential to visit your doctor for check-ups to ensure that you are doing the best you can to take care of your health. It is recommended to check your feet frequently for any possible cuts, bruises, swelling, corns or any other irregularities.

Taking Care of Elderly Feet
Cracked or dry feet can be treated by applying moisturizer often. It is also important not to wear old socks because the older the sock is, the higher the possibility there will be that there is bacteria there. Wear fresh socks and make sure they fit properly.

Proper foot health means that you can have a more active lifestyle and you will not be bogged down by pain. Foot health also leads to good circulation, which is paramount for overall health.

Flat Feet Can Be Painful

When one has flat feet, there are no (or slight) arches in the feet, and the entire sole appears to touch the ground when one is standing. Flat feet can develop if the arch does not develop normally during childhood, from natural wear and tear, or from an injury. This is a common condition that may be painless or cause the feet to tire easily and feel painful. If this happens, it is because the connecting ligaments and muscles of the foot are strained. The feet might tire easily. Rarely, it will lead to problems with moving the feet. However, even if this condition does not cause foot pain, it can contribute to ankle, knee, and back problems from a change in the leg’s alignment. Some children can develop flexible flat feet, and this is when the arch can be seen when the child stands on tiptoes or sits, but when standing, the arch disappears. Since other conditions can cause similar pain as with flat feet, it is suggested that you visit a podiatrist for a proper diagnosis and treatment.

Flatfoot is a condition many people suffer from. If you have flat feet, contact one of our podiatrists from Lovely Foot Associates, PC. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What Are Flat Feet?

Flatfoot is a condition in which the arch of the foot is depressed and the sole of the foot is almost completely in contact with the ground. About 20-30% of the population generally has flat feet because their arches never formed during growth.

Conditions & Problems:

Having flat feet makes it difficult to run or walk because of the stress placed on the ankles.

Alignment – The general alignment of your legs can be disrupted, because the ankles move inward which can cause major discomfort.

Knees – If you have complications with your knees, flat feet can be a contributor to arthritis in that area.

Symptoms

  • Pain around the heel or arch area
  • Trouble standing on the tip toe
  • Swelling around the inside of the ankle
  • Flat look to one or both feet
  • Having your shoes feel uneven when worn

Treatment

If you are experiencing pain and stress on the foot you may weaken the posterior tibial tendon, which runs around the inside of the ankle.
